New World IGA Suva Netball Association has set its priority to develop players for local and international competitions.
Tournament co-ordinator Gabriel Qoro said the preparation had begun as they will challenge the inter-district competition.
Nasinu is the defending champion.
Qoro said they were grateful to NewWorld IGA for sponsoring them again this year and supporting their opening knockout competition at the Netball Centre on Saturday.
“One of the issues that we lacked last year in terms of finance affected our weekly games and our preparation towards the IDC,” Qoro said.
“That could impact our participation as we ended up runners-up to Nasinu.
“That is something we would work on this year.
“At the moment we have 15 open women’s teams, 12 major men’s teams, and five development teams.
“We are anticipating more teams will join as the competition continues.”
In terms of developing young players, Qoro said Suva was well equipped as they organised their own coaching and umpiring skills for their players.
“These are the areas that give us the opportunity in helping out the national team,” he said.
“We are also trying to brush up the skills of the players, who are vying for positions in the national team.”
Meanwhile, Lomaiviti beat Tagimoucia Lomaiviti 20-17 in the super grade final.
Alumni beat Tikitui 24-14 in the men’s competition.
