A new ‘power play’ rule has been introduced this year in the Suva Netball Association 2025 club season to add excitement and intensity to the top women’s and men’s grade.

The power play allows teams in the Super (women’s) and Major (men’s) grades to score one or two points during the final five minutes of each quatre.

If a goal is scored from within the designated, it counts as for two points, similar to what is used in Australia and New Zealand.

Games for this officially kicked off last week with a knock-out competitions, which saw the top eight women’s open teams selected for further training to represent the association.

Last Saturday at the National Netball Centre in Suva marks the start of round one of the club league competitions.

A total of 13 rounds will be played to complete the season, with games scheduled every Saturday over the next 10 weeks.

This season features 10 clubs and 87 teams across nine grades- from under-nine (Angels) to teens, adults, Queens, Masters, Mixed and Men’s.

“We have made the competitions more exciting this year with the power play rule,” said games coordinator Dominiko Tabuaura.

“It brings something fresh to our local league and helps attract more interest from spectators as well as players.”

One of the new highlights this year is the participation of Naila netball club from Tailevu.

Their inclusion is part of efforts to grow and develop netball in Fiji.

Tabuaura also acknowledge sponsors who continue to support the association.

“We thank New World IGA for their ongoing support over the years. We’re also grateful to Sports World,” he said.

The Suva Netball Association aims to be inclusive by catering to all age groups and genders, promoting development from grassroots to elite level.
