Thirteen bean cart vendors operating near the Suva Bus Stand have been relocated to the Suva Municipal Market to mitigate safety risks posed by upcoming road upgrades.
Suva City Council (SCC) chair Tevita Boseiwaqa confirmed the move, citing hazards from heavy machinery set to occupy the MPI car park as part of the Fiji Roads Authority’s (FRA) redevelopment plans.
“Its a big risk if we allow them to continue operating business in the area, we would be liable to safety and hazard breach,” Mr Boseiwaqa explained.
“We have a set framework to redevelop the western bus stand, perhaps in the next fiscal year,” he said.
“But the main focus here is the road upgrades and FRA will be going in and out the MPI car park with big vehicles and heavy machinery, they’ll be utilising the space.
In a statement the council clarified that the vendors were thoroughly engaged with stalls by issuing notices and providing alternative measures.
“Over the past few months, the Council has been actively engaged with stall holders by issuing reminder notices and collaborating closely to identify suitable alternative locations for their businesses,” the statement read.
“These efforts have ensured the relocation process is smooth, equitable and in full compliance with Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards while facilitating the necessary infrastructure improvements.”
Mr Boseiwaqa maintained the process was inclusive and transparent and the decision was positively received by vendors.
