The Fiji National University also provides support services for students with disabilities.
This according to the FNU Disability coordinator Fuata Faktaufon during the 2023 FNU Open Day at Nasinu campus.
He said some support services provided included assisting students with admission and enrolment and securing scholarships for students who do not come from a financially stable background.
“So, we try to get most of our students under the TSLS scholarship,” Mr Faktaufon said, adding most of the students were supported by other forms of financial assistance.
He said once the students were enrolled, the necessary arrangements were made with their course facilitators to ensure the teaching teams were aware of the student’s disability.
The Disability Centre also seeks ways of finding reasonable accommodation and arranges for sign language interpreters to assist students with hearing impairment; this also includes various assistive technologies to help the students in their academic journey. Twenty students are assisted by the centre, four of whom are graduating at the end of the year.
FNU deputy chancellor Dr Alisi Vudiniabola, was chief guest at the opening ceremony.
She shared the opportunities provided by the Technical and Vocational Education and Training and Higher Education programs.
“We at FNU constantly update our programs to incorporate the latest advancements in technology and industry trends,” Dr Vudiniabola said.
“This ensures students are at the forefront of innovation, preparing them for the challenges and opportunities of a rapidly evolving world.”
