THE Penang sugar mill in Rakiraki terminated crushing for the 2014 season just before midnight on Saturday.
The mill processed 170,449 tonnes of cane and produced 20,904 tonnes of sugar.
Fiji Sugar Corporation executive chairman Abdul Khan said the mill was scheduled to cease crushing on Thursday last week.
However, processing was allowed until Saturday to ensure the maximum amount of harvestable cane was crushed. Cane from Ba was also diverted to Rakiraki because of problems at the Rarawai mill.
“Cane supply was a bit of an issue, which is why we had announced Thursday as the termination of crush date, however, we have allowed cane from Tavua and surrounding areas to be brought in and stopped operations at the mill on Saturday instead,” he said.
Crushing at the Lautoka and Rarawai mills is expected to continue until November to ensure that all harvestable crop is crushed this season.
