Stakeholders in the sugar industry will meet on May 10 to chalk out the future of the industry, Minister Charan Jeath Singh has announced.

He said the industry was here to stay and that his ministry was working with all stakeholders closely to make the required changes in the industry.

The workshop will provide a forum for stakeholders to exchange insights, initiatives, and strategic plans aimed at enhancing sugarcane production, mill efficiency, and the welfare of farmers.

Participants will also identify avenues for innovation, cooperation, and policy interventions to address the industry’s multifaceted challenges.

“The workshop will strive to align the fundamental strategies of the sugar industry as per the new the National Development Plan of Fiji which is currently being developed,” said Mr Singh.

Meanwhile, Mr Singh also announced a team from the Indian Sugar & General Engineering Corporation (ISGEC) Consultants and Engineers from India will review the three sugar mills operated by the Fiji Sugar Corporation (FSC).

“The study is scheduled from April 14 to April 24 and will be pivotal in assisting the government and Fiji Sugar Corporation to review the milling operations and explore the feasibility of setting up a new sugar mill in Rakiraki.”
