Boards overseeing key institutions in Fiji’s sugar industry are set for a shake-up, with the Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry calling for expressions of interest for new directors.

The call, issued by the Office of the Minister, seeks qualified individuals to serve on the boards of the Fiji Sugar Corporation Limited, the Sugar Research Institute of Fiji, and the Sugar Cane Growers Fund.

The move signals new appointments by the new Sugar Minister Tomasi Tunabuna.

According to a public notice, appointments will be merit-based, targeting individuals with more than 10 years of experience in areas such as agronomy, financial and risk management, sugar manufacturing, supply chain logistics and strategic planning.

The Ministry said board members would be expected to provide “strategic leadership and direction” while promoting accountability, good governance and improved financial management.

They will also be responsible for enhancing service delivery, managing risks and ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations.

The inclusion of expertise in sustainability, commodity trade and change management reflects an increased focus on modernising the sugar industry and improving efficiency.

The boards play a critical role in shaping policy direction and operational performance within the sector, and the recruitment drive is expected to bring fresh leadership into institutions central to Fiji’s sugar economy.

The initiative is also seen as part of wider efforts to rebuild confidence and drive long-term growth in the industry.
