The World Hindu Federation (Pacific) has released the content of a letter it had sent to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging him to raise concerns over the desecration of Hindu temples and sacred objects in Fiji.
Federation President Dr. Sunil Kumar expressed deep alarm over a recent wave of temple vandalism and thefts, including the reported removal of Shiv Lings from Hindu homes and temple precincts in Nadi.
“These attacks are deeply distressing to our community, which has lived in Fiji peacefully for generations,” Dr. Kumar wrote.
“Such acts of religious disrespect have caused widespread fear, pain, and insecurity among Hindus in Fiji.”
The letter described the pattern of attacks as part of a disturbing trend, alleging that they may be “connected in some way to the political atmosphere being propagated” under the current Fijian leadership.
“At this critical time, as the Prime Minister of Fiji visits India, we earnestly urge you, Sir, to raise this matter directly with him,” Dr. Kumar appealed to Prime Minister Modi.
He called on the Indian leader to seek an explanation from Mr. Rabuka on how his government intends to prevent future attacks, protect places of worship, and ensure the safety of Fiji’s Hindu community.
The Federation’s letter follows renewed calls from Hindu leaders across Fiji for stronger enforcement, surveillance, and public education to deter religiously motivated vandalism.
While police investigations are reportedly underway in Nadi, many in the Hindu community are demanding more visible action and government condemnation.
“We trust that under your leadership, the Government of India will stand firmly in solidarity with the Hindus of Fiji and ensure that this issue receives the serious attention it deserves,” Dr. Kumar added.
