China’s ambassador to Fiji Zhou Jian has called on the Chinese community in Fiji to make greater contributions to Fiji’s development.
In a speech during the commemoration of the Mid-Autumn Festival and China’s National Day in Suva on Sunday, Mr Zhou recalled the arrival of early Chinese to Fiji and the continued contributions made by the Chinese community to nation building.
“In 1855, our ancestors crossed the sea to become part of the multi-ethnic Fijian family,” Mr Zou said.
“Over nearly 170 years, Chinese compatriots in Fiji have lived together with the Fijian people, forged a profound friendship and contributed to the economic and social development of Fiji.
“Next year marks the 50th anniversary of China-Fiji diplomatic relations and the 170th anniversary of Chinese people coming to Fiji.
“On this important occasion, I would like to share with you the following: I hope you could make greater contributions to Fiji’s development,” Mr Zhou said.
“A good life is earned through hard work. A bright future is created through cooperation.
“We hope that all of you love the country where you live while remembering the country where you came from, continue to carry forward the fine virtues such as diligence, courage, unity, dedication and inclusiveness, continue to work hard and lawfully with all ethnic groups in Fiji, continue to participate in and make greater contributions to the development of Fiji.”
In the vein of the Mid-Autumn Festival, where Chinese culture celebrates harvest season and family reunion, the President of Fiji Ratu Wiliame Katonivere, in his speech, acknowledged the contribution of Chinese farmers to Fiji’s food security and agriculture.
“We acknowledge the Chinese farming community here today, they have been instrumental in farming our every day food crops, ensuring that our families have a choice of locally grown vegetables,” Ratu Wiliame said.
“I also acknowledge the Chinese farming community for their contribution to furthering the development of our domestic agriculture exports.
“I wish our farmers a great harvest this season. Thank you for your hard work on the farms, which enables us to put healthy food on our tables,” he said.
President of the Chinese Association of Fiji Jenny Seeto said next year’s 170th anniversary of the arrival of the first Chinese to Fiji will be a historic milestone for the Chinese community.
“As has been widely acknowledged many times, we are a small but vibrant community, and we have played a defining role in the development of Fiji and continue to play a significant role in shaping the social and economic fabric of Fiji,” Ms Seeto said.
