Good start for Michael Dhal in his first round of the Hobie Cat race at the 2024 Musket Cove Fiji Regatta yesterday.
For Dhal, it was less about winning and more about soaking up the good vibes. In his second year participating, he had already learned that this event was a blend of camaraderie, sailing, and simply having a great time.
“It’s always just a big party. Everyone comes to enjoy themselves, have a few beers, and not take things too seriously,” Dhal said.
The competition was well underway, but for Dhal, it wasn’t just about the races.
“If you lose, you just enjoy your day,” he said with a smile.
He surfed in the morning, taking advantage of the waves before the races started. This balance between competition and relaxation was exactly what made the event so special for Dhal.
Thursday was “Pirate Day,” a massive celebration where competitors and spectators alike partied all day long.
“Everyone partied all day,” Dhal added.
Dhal’s partner for the race was a young German participant.
“It’s nice to get him used to it,” Dhal said.
For him, it was about bringing the young sailor along for the ride and making the most of every moment.
As for how far they’d go in the competition, Dhal joked, “It depends on how many beers I have, I guess.”
The Hobie Cat competition was more than just a race for Dhal – it was an experience.
“It’s a great day. Everyone just enjoys themselves. I think everyone’s a little bit dusty from yesterday, but it’s definitely a beautiful day. Look at this place, it’s magical.”
For Dhal, it wasn’t just about sailing, but about the fun, the people, and the atmosphere. In his eyes, they were all winners just for being part of it
