IT was a great start for the Junior Bati team as they claimed a solid 28-12 win over Tonga U18 at Churchill Park yesterday.
The Fijians showed their dominance from the opening whistle, scoring three early tries. Two of those were converted by Jese Kuruduadua, giving them a comfortable 16-0 lead at halftime.
Tonga came back stronger after the break with Tevita Vailahi scoring their first try, which was successfully converted by Daniel Lehapoto. But the Junior Bati answered quickly with their fourth try by Samuela Ratavola, again converted by Kuruduadua.
Tonga kept fighting and added their second try through Sione Finau, with Lehapoto adding the extras. However, Fiji sealed the win with a final try from Gabby Nakalevu, converted by Save Ravono.
Junior Bati head coach Asaeli Saravaki said he was proud of the team’s performance.
“Most of these boys are U17, some are still in school, and some are dropouts but I’m happy with what they have produced. It was all about dedication and teamwork,” he said.
Tonga head coach Semisi Tomu also shared kind words.
“I congratulate Fiji for a good game, and I’m proud of my boys,” he said.
In another match played yesterday, the FNRL Rise Rookie edged Tonga Girls 22-16.
Meanwhile, the Kaiviti Silktails suffered their eighth loss of the season after going down 18-34 to West Tigers in Lautoka yesterday.
