A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck deep beneath the ocean, 361 kilometres south-southwest of Ono-i-Lau this morning.
Fiji Seismology said the quake was recorded at 5:53am and at a depth of 563 kilometres.
Despite its strength, authorities have stated that the earthquake does not pose any immediate tsunami threat to the Fiji region.
The quake originated within the Fiji-Tonga subduction zone, one of the most seismically active areas in the world.
This region is part of the complex boundary where the Pacific Plate is being forced beneath the Indo-Australian Plate, creating intense geological stress deep beneath the Earth’s surface.
