THE new year is a time for celebration and for setting annual and lifetime goals.

For the descendants of Captain Nelson Streeter, they have spent the past several years mapping out their goal and that is to strengthen their family ties.

The 2019 celebration was more sweeter when the Streeter family travelled from New Caledonia to meet their relatives in Fiji, more than a hundred years after Captain Nelson departed our shores.

Towards the back end of the 19th century, Captain Nelson sailed from Great Britain via the Pacific, and according to family records his ship ran aground at the Naselai Reef. On board, was the captain with his four children William, George, Maraiah and Joseph.

William was adopted by the Tui Nakelo while Captain Nelson journeyed on to New Caledonia with his three other children. He remarried twice and had two other children.

More than a century later, the Streeter family reunited with their Fijian family.
