Authorities are investigating a sewage spill in Nabua after raw waste polluted a stream beneath the Jerusalem Rd bridge, killing aquatic life.
Several dead eels were found within the affected section of the stream, indicating a toxic discharge and serious environmental impact.
The Ministry of Environment confirmed they received a report on December 30, 2025, after a bluish discoloration was seen in the stream.
Officers were immediately sent to the site to investigate the incident.
Ground inspections and drone surveys traced the source of the discharge to an underground culvert near the Nabua Sewerage Pump Station.
The inspection confirmed that raw sewage had overflowed from the culvert and was flowing directly into the stream, mixing with the bluish substance seen in the water.
Further investigations established that the pump station had not been operating since Christmas, causing sewage to back up and spill into the waterway.
The Environment Ministry believes the bluish substance was disposed of into the sewerage system upstream and was later released into the stream due to the pump station failure.
The pump station has since been restored to operation, and the discoloration has been cleared naturally.
Environmental monitoring and investigations remain ongoing.
The public has been strongly advised to avoid any use of the stream until further notice.
“The safety of the public and the protection of Fiji’s environment remain our top priorities,” permanent secretary for the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Dr Sivendra Michael said.
He said they would continue to monitor the situation, implement corrective measures, and keep communities informed.
