Rebuilding public trust and strengthening community ties sits at the centre of Fiji’s new national policing strategy unveiled yesterday.
The Ministry of Policing Strategic Plan 2025-2030 places strong emphasis on restoring confidence in law enforcement through deeper engagement with communities.
The document identifies “building community trust, confidence and all of nation approach” as a key pillar of future policing.
It acknowledges that effective policing cannot be achieved by enforcement alone, but requires cooperation between officers, communities and other stakeholders.
The strategy proposes approaches tailored to Fiji’s social and cultural structures, including closer alignment with the iTaukei vanua system.
Officials say this will help ensure policing remains relevant and responsive to community needs.
“Modern security challenges are interconnected,” the plan states, highlighting the importance of shared responsibility in addressing crime.
The strategy also calls for improved communication and transparency to strengthen relationships between police and the public.
Authorities believe trust is critical in encouraging communities to report crime and support investigations.
The plan signals a move toward a more inclusive model of policing, where community partnership plays a central role in maintaining law and order.
