Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Kasiano Vusonilawe has urged frontline supervisors to stop focusing on ranks and promotions and instead return to the basics of good policing and leadership.

ACP Vusonilawe made the comments while officiating at the Frontline Non-Commissioned Officers (NCO) Empowerment Workshop at the Fiji Police Academy yesterday morning.

Addressing the 21 participating officers, ACP Vusonilawe reminded them that their role as frontline supervisors carries significant responsibility.

“You are the supervisors of those doing the work on the front line. You should know your roles and responsibilities,” he said.

“We cannot continue to be emphasising how much our service needs to be up to par.”

He challenged the participants to refocus on fundamentals, saying the organisation must move away from a mindset driven by rank and title.

“Enough doing the work for the sake of just doing it. Enough of running after the ranks and promotions,” ACP Vusonilawe said.

“Do your work the right way first and promotions will find their way to you.”

The Assistant Commissioner stressed that quality leadership at the supervisory level directly impacts the standard of service delivered to the public.

“Provide quality leadership to your teams so they can provide quality service to members of the community,” he said.

The three-day Frontline NCOs Empowerment Workshop, aimed at strengthening leadership and supervisory skills among non-commissioned officers, concludes on Wednesday.
