YOUNG netters from Stella Maris Primary School in Suva were honoured for their achievements at the district and national level in an awards ceremony yesterday.

The ceremony took place at the school’s kiosk where their netball players from the under-9 to under-14 grade were honoured with certificates and trophies.

The school had scooped the overall winner prize for the Suva Netball Primary Zone for this year and the school’s under-14 team represented Suva in the Fiji Primary Schools Netball Competition.

Stella Maris’ head teacher Filisita Antonio said she reminded the young players they were not only winners in the Suva netball competition but nationally as well.

She said they were able to perform and produce such results due to the support of their parents, guardians and coaches.

She added having them on board meant the players could participate with the intent of enjoying the competition and most importantly, build up on their skills in the court.

“One thing is enjoying and one thing is getting the skills right and then not only winning for the girls – it’s discipline,” she mentioned.

She explained the students needed to display a well-rounded performance by doing their best in the classroom first, before given a chance to head out for training.

Meanwhile, the school’s netball head coach and Suva Netball president Alumeci Sachs lauded the efforts of the players for producing their best results.

She said coaches from the Suva Netball Association were brought in to assist the young players and pave the way for the future generation of netballers.
