Minister for Youth and Sports Jese Saukuru has announced a joint fundraiser for Olympic Games gold medallist Napolioni Bolaca’s knee surgery.

Officiating during the closing of the 47th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva on Saturday, Saukuru said it would be a joint fundraiser between his ministry and the Fiji Sports Council.

He also said the People’s Coalition Government would ensure that Jerry Tuwai’s family are able to enter their dream house.

“I wish to reiterate the importance of looking after our players’ welfare,” Saukuru said.

“We must create a safe environment for athletes while competing and training for their sport, as well as ensuring their safety and well-being away from the games.

“Fiji men’s rugby sevens team won another Olympics gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Summer Olympic Games while the women’s Fijiana team stunned the world with a bronze medal win of their own.

“While Fiji is basking in Olympic euphoria, it is a pity that our Rugby House never fully capitalised on the win and ride on the crest of being the current Olympic gold medal champion in the marketing of our product.

“Let us support all of our sports players in both good times and trying times.”

Saukuru said the Government would continue to support sporting teams through the Fiji National Sports Commission.

“Your government acknowledges the contribution of sports in our economy in terms of remittances and the tourism mileage gained by participating in international tournaments.”

In an earlier interview with this newspaper, Tuwai said he was grateful to Government for its consideration in providing the house which was promised by the previous administration.

“I’m thankful for what the FijiFirst government has done and the current government is doing right now,” Tuwai said.

“And for me, rugby has been part of my life.

“My main aim right now is for the Fiji 7s team to qualify for the Olympics next year and we will work on that.”

Tuwai said his future plans after retirement were to secure a coaching role.

“Maybe for Fiji if given the opportunity or an overseas coaching offer.”
