State seeks more time

THE State has requested an additional 21 days to file information and documents in the high-profile firearms case involving former attorney-general Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum.

The case involves Mr Sayed-Khaiyum, former Fiji Airways executive Shaenaz Voss, Fiji Airways safety, security and quality general manager Sharun Ali, and Fiji Airlines Ltd trading as Fiji Link.

They are accused of breaching civil aviation laws governing the carriage of handguns on aircraft.

When the matter was called before Justice Aruna Aluthge in the High Court in Lautoka yesterday, the State admitted it had failed to meet a March deadline for filing the information.

The court was also told the volume of disclosures was substantial.

The State sought to file disclosures for the court’s benefit while the defence could rely on disclosures already served in the magistrate’s court.

Justice Aluthge said he would transfer the matter to another court citing a conflict of interest, noting that his daughter and the daughter of the third accused attend the same primary school.

Devanesh Sharma and Gul Fatima represented Mr Sayed-Khaiyum and Shaenaz Voss, Wasu Pillay represented Sharun Ali and Fiji Link while Preeti Verma appeared for Fiji Airlines trading as Fiji Link.

The matter has been adjourned to May 19 when it will be heard before Justice Sekonaia Vodokisolomone.
