Former school teacher Kishore Kumar has opted to have the Legal Aid Commission represent him in the State’s appeal relating to his case.

Filed by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, the appeal is seeking judgment guidelines for similar future cybercrime offences, and was called before Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull at the High Court in Suva on Friday last week.

Mr Kumar was charged with making false pornographic claims against Assistant Foreign Affairs Minister Lenora Qereqeretabua, where he faced six counts of causing harm by posting electronic communication and a count of criminal intimidation.

In April, he had his 32-month sentence suspended for five years. He was also taken to the St Giles Hospital and released from the State’s custody after being registered as an outpatient and assigned a case manager.

The father-of-one was also charged with posting a video in which he uttered abusive words towards Agni Deo Singh, the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Work Place Relations where he was handed a 12-month jail term suspended for three years.

Justice Bull adjourned the matter for Mr Kumar to apply and confirm his legal representation before setting a timetable.

The appeal will be recalled on August 22.
