Claims that Fiji’s pilot licensing authority is invalid has been strongly refuted by Government.

Responding to numerous claims against the qualifications of Civil Aviation Authority of Fiji (CAAF) pilot licensing personnel, Civil Aviation Minister Viliame Gavoka warned such inflammatory commentary had the potential to undermine confidence in Fiji’s aviation system.

“These claims are not only factually incorrect but also recklessly misleading, and they threaten to undermine the credibility of Fiji’s aviation sector and its global reputation,” he said.

“Fiji’s aviation licensing framework is fully aligned with the standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and reflects international best practices.

“Our licensing processes are rigorous, transparent, and subject to regular oversight. Fijian pilots continue to successfully convert their licences for use in jurisdictions across the globe, including Australia, New Zealand, the United States (FAA), and Europe (EASA), a clear testament to the global trust in our system.”

Echoing Mr Gavoka’s response, CAAF’s chief executive officer Theresa Levestam said safety and security were paramount in aviation and standards evolved over time in response to technological advancements and international oversight developments.

“Although social media may sometimes be used to spread unverified claims, our focus remains on upholding international standards and protecting the travelling public, the aviation industry, and Fiji’s reputation on the global stage,” she said.

“The misinformation being circulated has affected staff morale, but it has not deterred the dedicated men and women of CAAF from fulfilling their responsibilities with professionalism and integrity.”
