The Pacific Sustainable Tourism Destination Standards (PSTS) has attained full recognition from the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC).
This was announced by the Pacific Tourism Organisation (SPTO) yesterday.
SPTO chief executive officer Christopher Cocker said the recognition was granted by the GSTC Assurance Panel during its meeting on May 29th, 2023, affirming the PSTS – Destination Standard’s alignment with the GSTC Destination Criteria v.2.0.
In a media release from SPTO, Mr Cocker congratulated the Division of Sustainable Tourism and the Tourism Recreation Conservation TRC Tourism for spearheading the development and implementation of the Pacific Sustainable Tourism Policy Framework (PSTPF) and PSTS.
He also emphasised the invaluable role of the PSTPF and PSTS in promoting sustainable tourism practices, empowering SPTO member countries and their local communities by adhering to the highest international standards.
“The recognition by the GSTC showcases the joint efforts of SPTO and the Tourism Recreation Conservation TRC Tourism in meeting the Sustainable Development Goals through the PSTPF and the PSTS as its commitment to sustainable tourism.
“The PSTS provides direction and guidance to develop and implement national sustainability standards for SPTO member countries by acting as a benchmark for each destination to assess current performance.
“The Standards will also progressively strengthen support for member countries and their tourism sector in becoming more sustainable through a range of actions and collaborative partnerships; create awareness and encourage visitors to travel responsibly.
“This achievement demonstrates our partners’ value to our work in the Pacific.
“The PSTPF and PSTS is key to reaching our shared vision that by 2030, the Pacific Islands will be empowered by and benefitting from resilient, prosperous, and inclusive tourism.
“I thank TRC for supporting our work, and we owe it to our member countries, stakeholders, and partners who have led and contributed time and input to the process,” Mr Cocker said.
According to the SPTO the GSTC-Recognised status is a testament to the rigorous review conducted by GSTC technical experts and the Assurance Panel.
Mr Cocker said it also signified that the PSTS adhered to the highest international standards of sustainable tourism and was on par with the GSTC Destination Criteria.
Focused on the Pacific Region, the PSTS encompasses a comprehensive scope covering various regional destinations.
