THE Fiji Sugar Corporation staff quarters are in a pathetic condition, according to its line minister Charan Jeath Singh.
He said many staff were currently forced to rent outside FSC boundaries because of the poor conditions of the quarters.
“The buildings are in terrible shape,” he said.
“This should have been addressed on an ongoing basis, but unfortunately, it wasn’t.”
He said he was aware of concerns about leaking roofs and deteriorating floors.
“I am aware that the state of the buildings is bad. This was something that needed to be done on an ongoing basis, so the state of the buildings would not be what it is today.”
He plans to push for the FSC board to approve renovations and repairs across all staff quarters when it meets in the next two weeks.
“The conditions of the buildings are in a pathetic state; we would like to invest in the quarters, so that our staff can come and stay.”
He said plans were underway to allocate funding in the next national budget for the urgent work.
