Sprinter hopes to hone skills

Ratu Meli Romuakalou Jr is hoping to iron out his sprint skills ahead of the third athletics trials in September to qualify for the Pacific Games in the 200 metres event.

The 21-year-old has already managed to do well in the 400 metre hurdles in a time of 55.09 seconds in his first run.

He said he normally only participates in the 200m and 400 meter events but this year he decided to try the 400m hurdles and he was delighted to secure a spot in his first run.

He said he was slowly improving his times in the 200m as he recorded a time of 22.08 seconds two weeks ago and will build on that for the next trials next month. Participating at the Pacific Games is not new for the Naitasiri lad as he was one of the youngest Team Fiji reps at the last games in Apia,Samoa.

He said while he failed to win a medal last time, he hopes this year’s Pacific Games will be different as he plans to win at least one medal in the Solomon Islands.

Romuakalou said the weekly competition boosted his physic and performance and thanked the Athletics Fiji officials for assisting him and other athletes achieve their potential.
