When Malolo rugby captain Imanueli Bari runs onto the field today for the Skipper Cup final against Naitasiri, it will be more than just another rugby match, it will be a moment filled with pride, emotion, and faith.
For Bari, the final carries special meaning as the 27-year-old skipper hails from Naitasiri, the very province his side will face in their quest for their first-ever Skipper Cup title.
“It will be a good game and a tough match, but we are preparing well. We know Naitasiri is a champion side of Fiji Rugby,” Bari said.
Bari’s rugby journey began humbly at Ratu Ilaisa Primary School. His passion for the game grew stronger as he moved on to Cuvu College, before later joining the National Fire Authority, balancing work and sport with dedication.
He was part of the Nadroga extended squad last year, before being given the opportunity to join Malolo, a decision he says has been life-changing.
“When they asked me to join Malolo last year, I didn’t hesitate. It has been a blessing to be part of this team and this journey.”
Throughout the season, Bari has led a group of young and determined players who continue to punch above their weight.
He credits their success not to strength or experience, but to faith.
“We have young boys using their talents. It’s not our strength but God’s. Throughout the competition we’ve had ups and downs, but we’ve continued to trust Him.”
As they prepare to face the experienced Naitasiri outfit, Bari’s message to his teammates is simple but powerful.
“Play from your heart, enjoy your day, and play for your family and vanua.”
For Malolo, Saturday’s final is more than a game it’s a celebration of faith, community, and the courage to dream beyond limits. And for Bari, it’s a chance to make history even if it means defeating his own home province to do it.
