Speaker of Parliament Filimone Jitoko will represent Fiji at Samoa’s 64th Independence Anniversary celebrations on behalf of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka.
The official visit will see the Speaker join government leaders, diplomats and invited guests in commemorating Samoa’s independence and reflecting on the country’s progress and development since gaining self-rule.
According to a statement, Jitoko’s participation underscores Fiji’s commitment to strengthening regional ties and recognising important milestones among Pacific Island nations.
“The Speaker’s participation highlights the importance the Government of Fiji places on recognising key milestones within the Pacific region and reaffirms its commitment to shared values of unity, progress, and respect for sovereignty,” the statement said.
As part of the official programme, Jitoko will attend a Thanksgiving Church Service, the formal commemoration of Samoa’s 64th Independence Anniversary and the opening of three new offices of the Legislative Assembly of Samoa.
He is also scheduled to take part in a number of ceremonial engagements organised as part of the national celebrations.
The visit will provide opportunities for regional dialogue, with courtesy calls planned between the Speaker and other Pacific leaders and dignitaries attending the event.
Samoa became the first Pacific Island nation to regain independence in 1962, and its annual Independence Day celebrations are among the region’s most significant national events.
The Speaker’s attendance comes as Fiji continues to strengthen diplomatic and parliamentary relationships across the Pacific through regional cooperation and engagement.
