Speaker leads Fiji Parliamentary delegation to British Parliament

A delegation from the Parliament of Fiji has begun an official study visit to the United Kingdom, led by the Speaker, with engagements at the UK Parliament.

The delegation includes Minister for Foreign Affairs Sakiasi Ditoka, opposition MPs Faiyaz Koya and Premila Kumar, Assistant Minister Naisa Tuinaceva and Parliament secretariat staff.

The Fijian delegation was formally welcomed by Sarah Dickson, Chief Executive of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association UK. The programme commenced with a guided tour of the Palace of Westminster.

The delegation later held meetings with Nusrat Ghani, Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons; Baroness Armstrong; and Rhiannon Hollis, Deputy Principal Clerk of the Joint Committee on Human Rights.

Discussions throughout the day focused on key parliamentary and governance issues, including the separation of powers, legislative scrutiny, the United Kingdom’s committee system, parliamentary procedures and the workings of the bicameral system.

The study visit is aimed at strengthening parliamentary capacity, sharing best practices and enhancing institutional cooperation between Fiji and the United Kingdom.
