Speaker of Parliament Filimone Jitoko has called on global leaders to uphold humanitarian norms and strengthen humanitarian action during crises, while addressing the 151st Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly.

Speaking on the theme “Upholding humanitarian norms and supporting humanitarian action in times of crisis,” Mr Jitoko urged inclusive and coordinated responses to global emergencies.

He acknowledged the recent peace in Gaza and Palestine, expressing hope that it would endure and inspire reconciliation efforts worldwide.

“For Small Island Developing States like Fiji, the climate crisis is not a distant threat but a daily reality,” he said.

“Fiji faces intensifying cyclones, rising sea levels, and displacement of communities—challenges that stretch national resources and test resilience.”

He highlighted Fiji’s leadership in humanitarian and climate action through progressive laws such as the Climate Change Act 2021 and Environmental Levy Act 2017, and initiatives like the Pacific Ocean as an ‘Ocean of Peace’, recently endorsed by Pacific leaders.

Mr Jitoko also noted Fiji’s commitment to transparency, democracy, and climate justice, emphasising that emergency powers must respect human rights.

“Let this Assembly spark bold, coordinated action—where dialogue leads to decisive progress,” he concluded.
