The Solomon Islands women’s basketball team aims to qualify for the Pacific Games next year, which they will be hosting.
Player Iyasha Poula Mauriasi said the FIBA Melanesian Cup which was schedules to begin next week, was an important tournament for them and only two teams would qualify for the Pacific Games.
“For majority of the players, this is their first time playing in the national team and to play in the Melanesian Cup next week is a big challenge,” she said.
“For me, I haven’t played in any international competition and I am looking forward to this tournament. Preparations have been tough but we’re managed to get through all the challenges.
“It has been a rough journey for us, most of the players are young and we’re getting in to the rhythm of playing basketball.
“We’re still developing and a few players participated in the last Melanesian Games. Most are new players.”
She said a big challenge was qualifying and they wanted to make their families back home proud as all hopes were on them to make it through this tournament.
“The pressure is on us as the country is depending on us right now to make it through. Getting to play in our own home ground will be a big boost for us so the onus is on us.”
