The First Battalion Fiji Infantry Regiment Batt-23 had been reminded that the change in government back home must not affect their jobs and obligations while serving under the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI).

During the Contingent Commander and Commanding Officer’s parade to acknowledge the troops for a job well done in 2022, Lieutenant-Colonel Netani Kaukimoce stressed the importance of “adjusting to the environment of change.”

“By achieving our roles and job description here at UNAMI you have taken charge of our safety in a fragile environment in a difficult time during summer and now in this winter season,” Lt-Col Kaukimoce said.

He said he was proud of the soldiers for being consistent in their duties,  despite the difficulties each soldier encountered while serving away from home for a year.

“I want to remind you of the important measures and challenges we faced during the uncertain rotations and lesser rest but we managed to achieve our goals,” he said.

The UNAMI role includes advising and assistingw the government and the people of Iraq on its key issues such as advancing the political dialogue and national reconciliation, electoral process, facilitating regional dialogue between Iraq and its neighbours, and promoting the protection of human rights and judicial and legal reforms.
