IT was the pure love and passion for the sport of football that paved the way for Shalen Lal to represent the formidable Ba Football side in his playing days.

Now a 42-year-old teacher at Arya Kanya Pathshala Primary School in Yalalevu, Ba, Lal fondly recalls his journey from a young football enthusiast to a loyal player for Ba FC.

Growing up, Lal found inspiration in his friends and family who shared his love for football.

He began playing at the district level when he was just 20-years-old and soon transitioned into coaching both national and district teams.

Despite receiving offers to play for other teams, Lal remained steadfast in his loyalty to Ba FC.

“Loyalty as a player was the most important thing we had in our times, so I am proud to say I have only played for BA FC, even though I had offers for monetary gains to play for other teams,” said Lal.

“I have spent good 11 years representing Ba at all tournaments with 11 appearances at the Battle of the Giants tournament and appearing in six finals and winning five times.”

One of Lal’s most cherished memories from the BOG was the 2009 final against Lautoka.

“Best memory in BOG was against Lautoka in the finals when I assisted our number one striker in 2009 Osea Vakatalesau to score the winning goal in the finals.

“Overall best memory in football was scoring against AS-Pirae in O league games in 2009 at Govind Park in the 91st minute of the goal giving Ba deserving three points.”

Lal attributes his success on the field to rigorous fitness training and a disciplined lifestyle.

“The level of fitness training back in the day was above the bar, always with our personal training and commitment towards our football being our first priority.

“Less of social life with choice of food so to be fit always, our football was always for our fans who supported us throughout our career.”

Transitioning from player to coach, Lal obtained his B License coaching qualification in 2016 and has since coached various district teams, including Nadi, Lautoka, Tavua, and Ba.

He also served as the National Head coach for the U17 and U20 teams, as well as the assistant coach for the Under-20 World Cup in 2015.

As the Battle of the Giants approaches, Lal wishes all the participating teams the best of luck, urging them to showcase their hard work and dedication on the field.
