GOVERNMENT will undertake a comprehensive review of six agriculture-related State-owned enterprises after a parliamentary report highlighted years of financial difficulties and reliance on Government support at Food Processors Fiji Pte Limited.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka revealed in Parliament today that $50,000 has been allocated in the 2026-2027 National Budget for the review.
He was contributing to debate on the Consolidated Review Report on the Annual Reports of Food Processors Fiji Pte Limited for 2008-2019, tabled as Parliamentary Paper No. 69 of 2026.
The report by the Standing Committee on Natural Resources found that the company, which processes and adds value to local commodities, struggled with financial sustainability during the period and periodically required Government grants and support.
Mr Rabuka said the issues at Food Processors were not isolated.
“When a state-owned entity requires Government grants, financial support or other assistance, there is ultimately a cost and a fiscal risk to Government,” he said.
“This is why Government is taking a broader look at the performance of state-owned enterprises.”
The review will examine the performance, efficiency, operations and sustainability of the SOEs and identify measures to improve performance and reduce reliance on Government support.
The six enterprises identified are Food Processes Fiji Pte Limited, Agri Marketing Authority of Fiji, Fiji Rice Limited, Fiji Coconut Millers Pte Limited, Fiji Meat Industry Board and Yaqara Pastoral Company.
Mr Rabuka stressed that the exercise was not about providing more funding to struggling entities.
“It is about understanding what is required for these entities to operate more efficiently, improve their financial performance, and strengthen their management and governance and, where possible, become less dependent on Government.”
