Smoking causes financial strain on a household, says Aseri Tagicakiverata who used to spend money on cigarettes, often leaving very little for family needs.

“I used to smoke before. A lot of money was spent on cigarettes,” he said.

Mr Tagicakiverata said tobacco use created unnecessary pressure on daily living expenses.

“When I used to get my pay, I would put aside money for kava and cigarettes, and then there was not enough left for other things at home.”

He spoke at length about his experience during the World No Tobacco Day commemoration at Vunivutu in Macuata last week.

He later realised that smoking was not only harmful to his health but also a waste of money which could have been used for household needs.

“I now support smoke-free rules in community spaces, including the Vunivutu community hall.

“I am glad these rules have been passed for the community hall at Vunivutu, and the villagers support this move.”

He said smoke-free areas helped protect non-smokers and also encouraged smokers to consider quitting.

“Community support is important to ensure the rules are followed and maintained.”

He said awareness in villages played a key role in helping people understand the impact of tobacco and make better choices.
