Twenty four Jai Narayan College ‘Recycling On the Go’ (ROG) ambassadors were yesterday equipped with smartphones in a bid to help them in their efforts to promote recycling and bring recognition to those involved in waste picking.

The smartphones were given by Bondwell Fiji.

During the handing over of the devices, Pacific Recycling Foundation founder and director Amitesh Deo said they started their recycling advocacy journey with the ROG ambassadors on March 18 this year.

“Through this journey of activism and advocacy, we have had very meaningful interactions in different situations,” he said.

“We thank the Ministry of Education for being one of the first educational administrators in the region to promote recycling and environmental sustainability in schools.”

Jai Narayan College principal Rajendra Kumar said the role of ROG ambassadors was to ensure the continuity of recycling awareness across all spheres of the community.

“Jai Narayan College being the pilot school for the ‘Recycle On The Go’ project, in partnership with Swire Shipping Company Ltd and Waste Recyclers Fiji Ltd, has been doing wonders and will continue to do so in the future,” he said.

“The 24 ambassadors and two teachers are initiating this program but it is the effort of all the children that makes this program a success. The amazing encouragement and unconditional support of our parents throughout have been extraordinary.

“They have stood by their children in every school event.”

From March to September this year, the ROG ambassadors managed to collect more than 1900kg of recyclables via their own initiatives.
