In her first Women’s Rugby World Cup appearance, Alfreda Fisher takes on the huge responsibility of leading the team as captain.

The 21-year-old who plays at back row, created history in May this year when she was named the Fijiana’s youngest ever skipper during a Test match against the Australian Wallaroos in Suva.

Her leadership qualities both on and off the paddock spoke for itself as Fijiana head coach Ioan Cunningham entrusted her to lead the national women’s team at the global stage.

Fisher who hails from Togo, Qamea in Taveuni embraced the challenge of being a leader.

“Humble and honoured to represent my country, it’s (being named captain) an added pressure but I’m managing well with a good performance and leading the girls,” she said.

The former Bucalevu Secondary School is relishing the opportunity of going up against teams which are ranked higher than the Fijiana.

“I’m excited, ready to take on the big stage with big teams, and hopefully our fans come out in numbers to support us.

“We are up for the match, nothing is impossible. The expectation is to stay longer in the UK; we really like it here,” she added.

Before joining the Fijian Drua women this year, Fisher was part of the Suva women’s rugby team that competed in Fiji Rugby’s Marama Championship.

She joined Suva in 2023 and was named the Best under-20 forward in 2024, scoring seven tries that season.

Fisher was also a part of the Fiji Women’s High Performance Unit squad in that same year, was roped into the Fijiana 7s extended squad but later joined the Republic of Fiji Navy where she is an ordinary seaman.

She made her debut for the national women’s team during the WXV 3 tournament in 2024, becoming the first woman from her village to don the national jumper.

Fisher joined the Fijian Drua women this year where she was awarded the 2025 Rooster Chicken Women’s Player of the Year.

The Fijiana team will take on Canada in their first match on Sunday, 4.30am at LNER Community Stadium in York, England.
