The Ram Sami Naitasiri rugby side overcame a strong and determined Tailevu challenge in round six of the Skipper Cup competition to win 22-21 at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori yesterday.

It was a close match between the two teams as they arm-wrestled their way throughout the game with a converted try in the last few minutes of the second half enough to secure a victory for Naitasiri.

Despite a successful penalty in the dying minutes of the game, it was too late for Tailevu, as the full-time hooter sounded.

Both teams showed their physical strength throughout the match as their respective defensive plays were on point.

Naitasiri skipper Kini Douglas said, despite the win by a narrow margin, he was proud of the boy’s performance.

He said most of the players in the squad were young, but they put on a brave performance against a determined Tailevu side.

“The boys did well, and we are happy with this win,” he said.

“Respect to our brothers from Tailevu for a good game, they really did well.”

Ahead of their next match against Yasawa, Douglas said they will need to work on strengthening their defense and overall fitness.

“Defense and fitness are areas I think we will need to work on before we take on Yasawa.”

He expressed his appreciation to the fans who turned up in numbers at Ratu Cakobau Park to cheer the boys on.

“The fans were really great today(yesterday) in terms of the support.

“Tailevu as our neighbors and brothers also brought their support with them so it was great.”

Meanwhile, in the under-20 match the junior Naitasiri side clinched a close 15-10 win over Tailevu.
