A six-year-old child is believed to be the country’s latest drowning victim after a swimming trip turned tragic last weekend.

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said the young girl was swimming with her sister at the Navatuvula River near Raralevu Village last Sunday when she disappeared.

She said a search conducted by villagers managed to recover the victim’s body a few metres from where she had disappeared.

She added a post mortem examination would be conducted to ascertain the cause of death.

Investigations continue.

The drowning death toll stands at three compared to eight for the same period last year.
