Six minor earthquakes recorded near Nausori

A series of minor earthquakes were recorded in and around Nausori Town between the evening of February 14 and the early hours of this morning, said Fiji Seismology.

The most significant event occurred at 9.09pm last night, registering a magnitude 3.3 earthquake at a depth of 11 kilometres, located about 8 kilometres northwest of Nausori Town. The tremor was felt along the Suva–Nausori corridor.

Earlier that evening, at 7.11pm, a magnitude 2.8 earthquake was recorded 9 kilometres north of Nausori Town, also at a depth of 11 kilometres. This event was likewise felt along the Suva–Nausori corridor and did not trigger any tsunami warnings.

Another felt earthquake occurred at 5.28pm, measuring magnitude 2.5 at a depth of 9 kilometres, located about 3 kilometres east-northeast of Nakini village. Residents along the Suva–Nausori corridor reported feeling this tremor as well.

Several smaller, unfelt tremors followed later in the night and into the early morning.

These included a magnitude 1.4 earthquake at 10.09pm, a magnitude 1.2 event at 12.29am, and a magnitude 1.1 earthquake at 1.10am on February 15.

All were recorded between 10 and 11 kilometres northwest of Nausori Town, at shallow depths ranging from 6 to 7 kilometres.

Authorities have reiterated that none of the earthquakes pose any immediate tsunami threat, and residents are advised to remain calm while continuing to follow official updates should further seismic activity occur.
