Six people charged in connection with the major drug seizure at Vatia Wharf are set to appear before the Rakiraki Magistrates Court, with the State to be represented by John Rabuku, Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions.
Police said that following consultations with the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), the four Ecuadorian nationals were each charged with one count of Unlawful Importation of Illicit Drugs, one count of Unlawful Possession of Illicit Drugs, and one count of Unlawful Entry into Fiji under Section 6(1) of the Immigration Act 2003.
The fifth accused, a 26-year-old man from Veisaru, Ba, has been charged with one count of Unlawful Importation of Illicit Drugs, two counts of Unlawful Possession of Illicit Drugs, and one count of Serious Assault.
The sixth accused, a 39-year-old man, also from Veisaru, Ba, faces one count of Unlawful Possession of Illicit Drugs and one count of Serious Assault.
The charges arise from a coordinated police operation at Vatia Wharf, where authorities intercepted suspects allegedly involved in transporting illicit substances.
All six accused are expected to be formally produced before the Rakiraki Magistrates Court, where the State will outline its case through the ODPP.
There is a heavy police presence in the town and around the court area.
Police said investigations are continuing and further charges have not been ruled out.
