Charan Jeath Singh is back as Sugar Minister after Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka reversed an earlier Cabinet allocation that placed the responsibility under Agriculture Minister Tomasi Tunabuna.
Mr Singh confirmed the development yesterday, saying he was informed of the decision through an email from the Prime Minister on Monday night.
“Now, I will be able to assist farmers more and will respect the decision of Mr Rabuka,” he said.
Mr Singh said he would formally take up the portfolio next week.
Mr Singh previously held the Sugar Industry portfolio before a Cabinet reshuffle several months ago which saw Mr Singh moved to Public Enterprises, Multi-Ethnic Affairs, Culture, Heritage and Arts.
Mr Singh’s return places him back at the centre of efforts to address challenges facing sugarcane farmers and the wider industry.
