Singh leaves

SUVA football coach Gurjit Singh has tendered in his resignation after coaching the Capital City for the past five years.

He coached Suva from 2012-2016 guiding Suva to the Fiji FACT win in 2012 followed by the Inter-District Championship later that year.

He masterminded Suva to a 1-0 win over Ba at Govind Park in Ba.

He then coached the side to win the 2014 National Football League title and then won the IDC at home after 31 years beating Nadi 1-0 at the ANZ Stadium in Suva.

“I have resigned from Suva FA. The reason for the resignation is that I need some break from football,” he said.

“It is time to give a break to someone else who has some new ideas.

“I joined them when they were not winning any tournament so I helped them win titles.

“In my first year we won two titles and it is history to win IDC.

“There are no other district to win two tournament in a year in Ba.

“I also took Suva to the OFC Champions League as we were the first team from the Southern Division to qualify.”

Singh said he had achieved his goals with Suva.

“My aim was to make Suva win and I delivered that for the fans.

“In football, there are ups and downs and a team in the world cannot win all the time.

“I had a good time with the officials,” the former national coach said.

“Suva still has a chance to win the National Football League and qualify for the OFC Champions League. I wish Suva FA all the best in future.”

Suva FA president Mahend Prasad confirmed Singh’s resignation.

“As a president I see it as a huge loss for Suva FA.

“I did talk to him but he had already made up his mind to take a break from football,” Prasad said.

“He was the only coach who got us the glory when the team were not winning.

“We have lost an experienced coach and it will be hard to find such coaches. We will always have doors opened for him to come and join us in the future and he has agreed to it.”
