“Expect some changes to the sugar boards and other positions.”
Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh said this during his visit to the office of the Ministry of Sugar yesterday.
“I am already seeing support coming forth from people that have the industry at heart,” he said.
Mr Singh said working on the Penang mill and rail network restoration were his major priorities.
“We need to reduce transport cost of growers to ensure they make profits.
“Our rail networks have been neglected for a long time now.”
He said the people of Rakiraki had lost confidence in cane farming when the Penang mill was closed down.
“I have been told there are so many closed sugar mills overseas. We could look at the possibilities of those places and perhaps set-up a mill of smaller size with more efficiency that can at least get the Rakiraki community going again.
“As we move forward, we will hold a sugar forum where we will invite all sugar industry stakeholders and discuss things that needs to be implemented quickly.”
