In winning their match against the Ryde Eastwood Hawks last Saturday in Round 16 of the NSWRL Ron Massey Cup, the Kaiviti Silktails Rugby League Football Club (RLFC) paid homage to their former club general manager, the late Jacquie Shannon.

Having a 28-6 win against the visiting side in Lautoka, the team wanted to be the first to win the inaugural Jacquie Shannon Memorial Bowl.

Not only did the Silktails win the Jacquie Shannon Memorial Bowl they also advanced in the Ron Massey Cup competition after beating the hawks.

The late Ms Shannon was the team’s first football manager who later was promoted as the club’s general manager.

Kaiviti Silktails RLFC in a statement highlighted that proceeds from the Jacquie Shannon Memorial Bowl competition will go to the club’s newly formed community initiative, the Kaiviti Silktails Community Youth Program.

“The program will be launched in honour of our late football manager Jacquie Shannon and inspired by the club’s long-standing partnership with PCYC NSW where our Sydney training base is,” the club stated.

“Our players will work for this program in 2023 delivering 20 to 30 hours a week of youth work to balance that out with their training commitments.

“The players will wear a commemorative strip featuring the club’s logo and all jersey’s will be auctioned online with all monies raised including proceeds from the match to go to the clubs community youth program.”

The late Ms Shannon’s silhouette will be part of the logo design for the program.

During the competition last Saturday, the Silktails were led out by 20-year-old back rower Fenton Williams, who is the nephew of the late Ms Shannon who everyone in the club fondly called Aunty Jacquie.
