A 15-YEAR-OLD girl with special needs from Taveuni recently gave birth, according to the Soqosoqo Vakamamara Cakaudrove branch.

It has raised concerns that the non-verbal girl, who is still being fed and cared for, may have been abused, says the association’s project coordinator, Maca Shaw.

Ms Shaw said the incident was one of two involving girls with disabilities being impregnated.

“One girl gave birth in December, and the other, who is 15, gave birth in January,” she said.

Ms Shaw said the two cases were brought in during a sexual abuse awareness session she had been conducting in a village.

“There is too much violence in this province,” she said.

“I’m trying to understand why it keeps happening, especially to our most vulnerable.”

Ms Shaw admitted not reporting the matter to the police, saying her role was not to report cases but to work with villagers to raise awareness and support prevention.

“It’s the role of the village headman to report to the authorities.

“My focus is on creating awareness and helping communities find their own solutions.”

She said community leadership was critical to stop abuse and protect vulnerable members of society.

Questions sent to the police last week remained unanswered.
