Traveling all the way from Kadavu to Navua to compete in the 1st Fiji Bitter Serua 7s, the Sidefloat Buliya men’s side has proven to be a team to watch out for in the more local 7s tournaments in the future.
The side displayed good attacking skills in standing up against giant teams in the tournament.
Team coach, Asesela Waqa said the sole purpose of registering the team in the Serua 7s was to get his players exposed to a very competitive tournament.
“Being able to reach the plate semi-final just shows the untapped skills these players have. We knew that there would be a lot of strong teams like Tabadamu, Police, and Army but we were determined to prove ourselves,” he said.
According to Waqa, competing at the Serua 7s was only the beginning of their build-up in local 7s rugby.
“We just wanted to get the boys exposed to a very competitive environment but they have been able to do the unexpected. This is only the beginning of our venture into local 7s rugby and you can expect to see us in more events in the future.”
Buliya captain Alexander Masi shared similar thoughts on his team’s performance at the tournament.
“We were unable to win the plate semi-final but we are very happy to have come this far,” Masi said.
Traveling from Kadavu to Navua, the Buliya side also brought along with them a handful of fans and supporters who cheered the team during all the games.
“Some of our supporters were able to come with us to the tournament and we are just thankful to them for being behind the team.”
The team will be returning back to Kadavu tomorrow.
