About 30 unemployed youths of Kalekana settlement outside Lami Town are looking at ways to earn money since the COVID-19 pandemic hit Fiji in March this year.

Youth leader Samuela Delai, in his presentation to Pacific youths at the University of the South Pacific last week during the International Youth Day regional workshop, said his peers managed to make fruit baskets or baskets for storing food made from fishing lines when Suva was on lockdown.

“I used to work in the Chinese fishing vessels so when COVID-19 came to Fiji, we were unemployed, so we were thinking of what to do to earn money.

We came up with this idea and just use the fishing lines that we have.

“We make use of our talent and our group is called Wainivokai Youth and we post our crafts on our Facebook page Wainivokai Youth talent.

“It is selling well and we have marketed our products by using social media and this is something we are doing so we can earn money and we don’t resort to crime,” Mr Delai said.

The youth group is based in Kalekana.
