Show care, not pity

PLEASE feed those in need — the poor in our communities, people living with disabilities, and our senior citizens.

This was the urgent plea from Women’s Minister Sashi Kiran yesterday.

In a statement, Ms Kiran said kindness and compassion were much needed in this world.

“And we are grateful to all who contribute to supporting those in need,” she said.

“Our welfare officers work with the Fiji Police Force each week to find homes for those living on the streets and reunite them with their families.

“Our teams have taken some of them back to their homes in the outer islands, as well as to Naitasiri and Tailevu.

“We have found that some children come to town with their parents and get attracted to street life. Others stay with relatives around the cities, roam the streets during the day, and return home in the evenings or when it suits them.

“Some parents have told us they know their children will make their way home, but when they find food and other necessities, they stay as long as they can.”
