DEFENDING champions of the shooting event in the Pacific Games is preparing to once again dominate the competition in Papua New Guinea.
The shooting team’s section manager Henry Stephen said Fiji was sending its first competition pistol team to the Pacific Games.
He said the management and staff of Williams and Gosling generously gave Team Fiji shooters full training access to their company gym.
“Fiji’s pistol team will be using the Shooting Association’s newly-acquired Olympic grade Morini brand pistols, which the Shooting Association of Fiji sees as a costly but worthwhile investment, as its members and Team Fiji shooters deserve the best in their preparation for the games,” Stephen said.
“The nine-member Fiji team of shooters have increased their training schedules in the seven weeks before leaving for PNG and the pressure to perform is beginning to tell as team members reshuffle their home and work commitments to include a more demanding and intense training schedule.
“Fiji is the defending champions in the DTL shotgun events and is under pressure to equal or better this record, and will have to out- perform their Pacific rivals who have been training to unseat Fiji as defending champions.”
Stephen said Fiji won all three team and individual gold medals at the 2011 Pacific Games in New Caledonia.
He added Fiji shooters would go to Port Moresby in July, under no illusions of an easy win.
