THE number of derelict vessels scattered across Suva Harbour has significantly reduced as Government continues efforts to remove abandoned ships from the area.
Speaking in Parliament on Monday, Minister for Information, Environment and Climate Change, Lynda Tabuya said the number of abandoned and rusting vessels in Suva Harbour had dropped from 44 in 2024 to 24 following ongoing removal works.
Ms Tabuya said phase one of the program began in December last year and focused on abandoned vessels within Suva Harbour.
“The program was supported by $US1 million from the Waitt Foundation,” she said.
According to Government, 13 vessels were removed in 2025, while another seven had been removed since January this year.
The removals included six vessels that had been restored to operational status and taken out of Suva Port limits.
One vessel was safely scuttled at approved coordinates provided by the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji.
The removal program continues as Government works to clear derelict vessels from Suva Harbour.
