BLUE Lagoon Cruises’ MV Fiji Princess has retired following a grounding incident during severe weather experienced on April 4 at Monuriki Island in the Malolo Group.
In a statement, the company said the vessel dragged anchor while at berth before running aground on a nearby reef, bringing an abrupt end to more than 22 years of service.
The company described the decision as a difficult but necessary step after initial recovery efforts.
The MV Fiji Princess had long been a key part of the company’s operations, offering boutique cruise experiences across Fiji’s island groups and building a loyal following among international and local travellers.
Passengers affected by the vessel’s retirement will be contacted directly, with the company outlining alternative arrangements.
“Guests impacted by the retirement of Fiji Princess will be provided with an array of alternative options,” Blue Lagoon Cruises said.
As the company moves to manage bookings, it has also invited past passengers to mark the vessel’s legacy.
“The team at Blue Lagoon Cruises appreciates the many guests who cruised on board Fiji Princess and we know many amazing memories were created.
“We would therefore love for you to share your images, memories or comments as a final salute and as a fitting end to an amasing era of cruising.
“Blue Lagoon Cruises would like to say a big vinaka vakalevu to everyone for their support and well wishes during this difficult time.
The retirement signals the end of a long-serving vessel in Fiji’s tourism sector, closing a chapter for one of the country’s well-known small-ship cruise experiences.
